Dr. Best explains some of the educational features of this program:

The program is unique in several ways.

First, it can be used in either a guided reading/whole language or phonics system as well as in two kinds of phonics teaching. I believe it is the first literacy program in the world to have this feature. Each reading book is coordinated with three leveled books measurement: Fountas/Pinnell, UK Book bands, and Reading Recovery. Each book is also coordinated with the Synthetic Phonics system used in the UK.

Second, it incorporates MagicPEN technology so that every page of the reading books can be heard in 25 languages by lightly touching them with a special "pen." With the MagicPEN the characters and objects in the illustrations talk and sing, and kids can record their own voices into illustrations or text. This is also the first literacy program in the world using this interactive feature and technology. (There is one program in New Zealand where one can use a similar "pen" to hear the text, but in English only, with no talking illustrations, and no recording feature. The technology used there is also "cruder" in the sense that large, visible dots cover all the text.)

Third, it is the first literacy program that uses traditional stories from India and promotes Eastern culture, while at the same time using top-notch Western quality in all areas. With the present emphasis on multi-culturalism and the ease with which these books can be used to supplement other programs, teachers in any school can use selected texts to enhance the students' worldviews.

Other distinctive features: The program comes with complete teaching guides that should enable even inexperienced persons to have success, and many activities that engage children along the full range of Bloom's taxonomy.
